Koh Larn, often called Coral Island, offers a stunning tropical escape year-round. However, the island’s charm and the quality of your experience are greatly influenced by the three distinct seasons. Understanding the weather patterns is key to planning your perfect beach getaway.
Koh Larn’s Three Seasons
The climate on Koh Larn (and the surrounding Pattaya area) is tropical, meaning it’s generally hot and humid throughout the year, but with significant variation in rainfall and perceived comfort.
1. The Cool/Dry Season (Peak Season): November to February
This is the most popular and highly recommended time to visit Koh Larn.
- Weather: Characterized by comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall. The weather is consistently sunny, making it ideal for the beach.
- Average High Temperature: 30°C to 32°C (86°F to 90°F).
- Rainfall: Very low. You can expect mostly dry days, particularly in December and January.
- Conditions: The sea is at its clearest and calmest, offering the best conditions for snorkeling, diving, and all water sports.
- Crowds: Expect higher crowds, especially on weekends, public holidays, and during the Christmas/New Year period. Prices for accommodation and tours may be slightly higher.
2. The Hot Season (Shoulder Season): March to May
This period marks the transition into the rainy season, bringing the highest temperatures of the year.
- Weather: Temperatures and humidity soar, making midday sun intense. Rain showers begin to increase toward the end of the season.
- Average High Temperature: 32°C to 34°C (90°F to 93°F), often feeling hotter. April is typically the warmest month.
- Rainfall: Rainfall begins to increase in April and May, often coming in the form of heavy, short-lived afternoon thunderstorms.
- Conditions: The intense heat means fewer people at the beaches during peak midday hours, but the water remains warm and perfect for swimming. The earlier part of the season still offers plenty of sunshine.
- Crowds: Crowds are moderate, though Thai New Year (Songkran in April) sees a major spike in domestic tourism.
3. The Rainy/Monsoon Season (Low Season): June to October
This is the monsoon period, defined by higher rainfall, though it’s important to know that it is not necessarily a “washout.”
Crowds & Value: This is the low season, offering the best value for flights and accommodation. The island is less crowded, providing a more peaceful experience if you don’t mind the possibility of rain.
Weather: Expect higher humidity and frequent rain, especially during the afternoon. The temperature remains hot, but the rain offers occasional relief.
Average High Temperature: 31°C to 32°C ( 88°F to 90°F ).
Rainfall: High. September and October are typically the wettest months. Rain often comes in heavy bursts that last an hour or two, followed by clear skies. However, extended cloudy and rainy periods are possible.
Conditions: The sea can be choppier, and visibility for snorkeling/diving may be reduced. Boat transfers (especially speedboats) may be subject to delays or cancellations on days with strong storms.
